A weekend in Devizes
Day 1 - 28th March
For Bridget's birthday we decided to have a long weekend away and decide on Devizes. We stayed at the Camping and Caravanning site at Sells Green just outside Devizes on the Kennet and Avon canal.
A very pleasant site which has some refurbished motorhome pitches and friendly staff.
We finished the day with a nice walk down the canal
Day 2 - 29th March
Charlotte came to join us but not until we had done a long walk to Melksham. The walk was a bit eventful at the start with the footpath crossing into a farm which was so muddy we gave up and ended up having to carry Mitzi and Luna down the A365 Bath Road for about 2/3 of a mile!
Melksham was lovely and we had a really nice chat to the woman in the tourist office who suggested tea and cake in the Art House Cafe, the old town firestation. It was so good we ended up buying lunch there. We left town and walked south back to the canal and stopped at a lock on the canal for lunch.
We arrived back just as Charlotte arrived, good timing, with 2 very tired dogs in tow! Mitzi especially!
Day 3 - 30th March
Another long walk today into Devizes. The canal gets really interesting on the way to Devizes with a series of 29 locks known as the CaenHill locks. There is a nice cafe at the top and we had some excellent ice creams.
We then walked on into Devizes and expored a bit. There was nothing that interesting except Wadswoth Brewery. After looking a google etc we decided to walk to Rowde and have lunch at the George and Dragon.... a mistake in the end as they jsut stopped serving food as we arrived - earlier than advertised but apparently they had a very busy evening as it was a bank holiday weekend! The publican however gave us a lift back to Devizes and we ate a satisfactory lunch on the canal in The Black Horse Inn.
We then retraced our steps back to the camp site for a well earned dinner.
Day 4 - March 31
Time to go home.... but not before Bridget and Charlotte did an early morning run down the canal!
A really nice few days with some simply wonderful weather. I am sure we will visit a few more canal sites in the coming years.
