Spanish Basque Country

On Sunday we bought mammouth croisants from the campsite shop and then decided to do the 6km walk to Orio. On the way we stopped to watch a 7km run that started from the vinyard next door. It was up and down the vines which looked hard work! (I did look it up to see if I could join in but the entry date had past and I did not have my trail shoes with me!)

The walk was not that exciting and a bit too far for Mitzi. So once we were there we sat in a cafe by the beach and had coffee and then a glass of wine and calamari - we just had to follow everyone else! We then sat on the beach and had our picnic so the dogs could have a good run around. The walk home was slow and Mitzi demanded to be carried up the hills! That night we had a fantastic sunset from the van.

The next day we drove round the coast. We briefly stopped in Zumaia as we wanted to walk along the coast which apparently has fascinating flyscha formations but we decided it was too far for Mitzi and too hot to leave her in the van. So we drove onto Lekeito and parked right by the beach. After lunch we had a great walk on the beach and then I had swim. The beach was deserted but one other person was swimming so I took the plunge! It was lovely in the sea.

That night we parked in the busy aire in town and then walked round town. We had a beer in a nice bar by the harbour - we returned there in the morning for a coffee and croissant.

The next day we drove to Bilbao. There is an aire right at the top of the city which we found eventually. In the afternoon we took the bus to the old town and walked to the Guggenheim museum. It is an amazing building and I was definitly more impressed by the sculptures outside than the art inside! We then walked back up to the aire through the more modern part of the city.
