To Sunny Spain
The next day we decided that we would try and explore the Bordeaux area. We had worked out that you could get a ferry from Blaye to Lamarque across the Gironde River. It had a 3.5T limit so we hoped we would be OK. So we left before breakfast to try and get the 11am ferry. We got there at 10.45 and it all looked very quiet. We drove up the ferry lane and a man came out and told us it was not working - obviously not something they thought of putting on the website! So we parked up and had a look round the town - particularly the 'squat' fortress which dates back to the 17th century which formed part of the defences of the port of Bordeaux against the British.

After a brunch in Blaye we decided to drive to St Emilion which is very famous for its wine. Sadly it was a miserable day but we had a wander around the medieval streets and admired the view from the Eglise de Saint-Emilion, apparently the largest monolithic church in Europe. You can only go in with a tour and as there were no English tours that day we walked round the town, stopped for coffee and a Canele - a small tradional cake - and popped into a wine shop to purchase a couple of local wines.

From St Emilion we drove to a campsite just south of Bordeux for the night. (called Beausoleil - funny considering it was very wet!)
The next day we woke to pouring rain so decided to pay the tolls and drive to Spain. We arrived at lunch time and booked ourselves into a campsite for two nights with an amazing view over the town of Zarautz. In the afternoon we had a short wander to the remains of the Malla Arria Pier and mining warehouse before settling in for night with some of the Bordeaux wine we had purchased!
